Leland advises insurers on coverage issues under directors and officers (D&O), fiduciary, errors & omissions, cyber, crime, commercial general liability, and employment practices liability policies.  He provides strategic advice and an in depth understanding of key drivers of exposure when monitoring complex litigation and regulatory investigations, including the impact of policyholder insolvency and bankruptcy, and engages deeply with the merits of cases to best represent insurers when addressing coverage issues with policyholders and advocating client interests at mediation.

When coverage litigation is necessary, Leland represents professional, cyber, and commercial general liability insurers in state and federal courts across the country and in arbitration.  Leland recognizes the importance of strategically evaluating key issues and case forum before suit is filed and continuously evaluates strategy to creatively and efficiently achieve the best result through a litigated outcome or negotiated resolution.  He often argues dispositive motions in trial courts and briefs and argues cases in appellate court.  He has taken and defended dozens of fact and expert witness depositions.  Leland was first chair in a 2021 virtual bench trial in a D&O coverage matter.

Prior to joining LRD, Leland was an associate and then partner at a large Washington, D.C.-based law firm focusing on insurance coverage and litigation.

Leland lives in Chevy Chase, Maryland with his wife Laura, daughter Tate, and son Mercer.
